- A Software-defined Radio Architecture for the Next Generation of Wireless Hubs and Open Architecture Wireless Hubs (PDF)
The concept behind flexcellTM is to provide a family of affordable, high-capacity radio development platforms that support the development of new mobile services to users within a specific geographical area. This family of radio development platforms can simultaneously support multiple frequency bands, channels, protocols, and applications, and it is capable of transmitting voice, video, and data all at once. However, our solution is not a one-size-fits-all system. Rather, it builds upon common open-system architecture and industry standards to provide affordability and scalability.
- Developing a GSM Modem on a DSP/FPGA Architecture (PDF)
GSM (Global System for Mobile) is the most widely-used cellular phone technology. Having begun mostly as a European standard, it has spread throughout the world to become ubiquitous. GSM was one of the first digital cellular systems, and as such, represented another level of magnitude in terms of complexity, with support for growth features such as GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), which provides data capabilities to GSM phones. In this context, designing a GSM system is a complex task and could benefit from advanced design flow techniques where initial system simulation phases can be seamlessly carried over to the implementation phases.
- Using a DSP-FPGA architecture with PowerPC cores for high-density packetized voice VoIP/VoN processing applications (PDF)
Hybrid DSP/FPGA/RISC architectures can be very effective for high-performance Voice-over-Network (VoN), or VoIP processing applications. DSP capabilities in newer FPGA devices allow for the signal processing to be partitioned and balanced between the DSP and the FPGA. Moreover, new capabilities in Xilinx’s Virtex-II Pro FPGA platform, such as PowerPC cores, can be used to include the protocol layer and network interface in the FPGA, thereby increasing the density of the VoIP/VoN solution. This article explores the design aspects of a VoIP system using this architecture.
- Prototyping a MIMO W-CDMA system using a system-level approach (PDF)
This paper describes the development and proto-typing of a MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple Output) wireless link designed to operate under the WCDMA third generation cellular standard. The said development is performed in an integrated, system-level fashion on a DSP/FPGA development platform, the Lyrtech SignalMaster. The first part of the paper will succintly describe the evolution and the main features of the WCDMA standard. Likewise, the second part reviews the basic concepts of space-time processing and MIMO communications. The third part details the system-level design flow and prototyp-ing approach exploiting the strong linkage between Simulink and the SignalMaster platform. Finally, preliminary implementation results and comparisons with other design and prototyping tools and approaches are provided.
