SFF SDR Evaluation Module
The Small Form Factor (SFF) Software-defined Radio (SDR) Evaluation Module is a unique new product that addresses the special portable SDR needs of military, public safety, and commercial markets. It was designed around the latest DSP and FPGA technology — Lyrtech’s area of expertise — as a low-cost, off-the-shelf, integrated hardware and software development solution.
The SFF SDR Evaluation Module is part of the SFF SDR family, which also includes:
- SFF SDR Development Platform: includes three distinct modules — the Digital Processing Module, the Data Conversion Module, and the RF Module — offering developers highly flexible development capabilities including the model-based design kit board support package.
- SFF SCA Development Platform: SCA-enabled version of the SFF SDR Development Platform, with the first CORBA-enabled FPGA on an SCA platform.

This paper presents the SDR architecture needed in order to facilitate rapid and efficient development of radios mainly targeted to portable applications. It describes how this kind of platform can help radio developers in overcoming the challenges of designing low-power, small form factor devices. It covers topics like the relevance of hybrid GPP/DSP/FPGA processing, the need for modularity, waveform partitioning, and design flows.
